This evocative collection of 23 sepia-toned inkjet prints pays homage to the famous "sentinels of the desert," the majestic saguaro cactus, found only in the Sonora Desert of southern Arizona and northern Mexico.  While most saguaro images are picture-postcard fare, this group of images presents a very different perspective since the giant plants were photographed, while still erect, either dead or in the very last stages of their long lives.  The resulting images have been described as lyrical, beautiful, grotesque, often humanoid in their expressiveness and demeanor, poetic, tragic, and in similar and varying emotional terms.

The archival inkjet prints were made from medium-format gelatin silver originals, which were scanned, processed and printed.  The photographs were made in the Catalina Foothills area of Tucson, Arizona.
