WELCOME TO THE PHOTOGRAPHY OF CY LEHRER

Welcome to my photography, produced during more than 40 years and spanning the film/chemical era as well as the digital revolution, which I firmly resisted for years and finally embraced wholeheartedly in 2004, trading silver granules for pixels and delving into color for the very first time.

This collection is organized into photo groups, easily accessed and viewed by selecting from the Navigation Menu “Chronological List and Links to Photo Groups,” and then clicking on the particular portfolio of interest.

Each portfolio is introduced by a short description followed by large thumbnails of all photos in the group; clicking on a thumbnail will bring up an enlarged view and a feature allowing sequential viewing of any, or all images in the portfolio. A Slide Show may also be selected for viewing.

My various threads of photographic interest and style as they evolved over the decades are described in the following section, and in greater depth in the section entitled “Retrospective Thoughts on the Image Threads” found later in the site. This was written in conjunction with a major retrospective exhibition of my work in 2007; the leitmotifs described continue to inform and undergird my work.

My fond hope is that you find the photographs either pleasing, provocative, amusing, depressing, bizarre, loopy, threatening, ambiguous, elegant, historic, soulful, alienating, zany, ironic, baffling, beautiful...or any combination of these. It’s all there, and more. If you respond I will have realized my goal of tapping into the infinite range of human emotion and reaction to imagery.

At the end of the day, I believe that is what making photographs is all about.
